Meet Rosa Vergil Garcia

This week Fresh Start is featuring Rosa our Family Advocate and trusted counselor.  Rosa serves families and children in the Capitol Hill, Central, and Southwest Denver neighborhoods.  She is fluent in Spanish and has been a family activist for over twenty years.  Rosa has assisted countless families, homeless people, and low-income individuals while working at the Samaritan House, Denver Cares, House of Hope, El Centro Humanitario, and Fresh Start.

Rosa is a respected Board member of the Colorado Statewide Parent Coalition since 1989.  On October 8, 2011 she was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from the Board of Directors of the Coalition.  CONGRATULATIONS, Rosa!

Connecting with the Spanish-Speaking Community

Among Rosa’s greatest strength is her ability to provide outreach and recruitment with the Spanish-Speaking community.  Nearly every week, Rosa is a featured guest on ONDA 1150 AM and LUZ 1650 AM radio.  She is always a popular and welcomed announcer for human services and many other referrals to agencies throughout the State of Colorado.  The radio stations allow one hour of phone calls from the audience to speak with Rosa.  Because many issues are of a confidential nature, Rosa usually makes appointments with the callers who need personal assistance.  The list of callers includes out of school youth and students looking for information and employment.

Responding to Team Decision Making Meetings (TDM)

Fresh Start receives numerous calls per week from the Denver Department of Social Services for Rosa to attend a Team Decision Meeting for families.  Last week was very rewarding to work with a father who needed an evaluation to obtain custody of his children. Mother is currently in custody and the children are placed with a caring foster family.  Rosa is working directly with dad in parenting classes and he is building his skills to eventually reunify with his children.  Rosa is providing support and encouragement to the family and is hopeful they will all be reunited in the near future. THANK you, Rosa!

Working Closely with the Denver Police Department

Rosa has a wonderful reputation in the community for assisting families during a crisis.  Sometimes it requires coordination and cooperation with the Denver Police Department.  Community Resource Officers, Detectives, and Victim Advocates know Rosa personally and professionally.  Recently, a man was severely beaten and is in critical condition at Denver Health Intensive Care Unit.

The wife and mother of four children is devastated by this tragic event.  While the crime is being investigated by the Denver Police, Rosa is working with family.  Since dad was the primary worker, the family needed emergency services immediately.  Rosa assisted with all the paper work to enroll in public benefits and for food stamps.  The mom has been receiving support services at the Southwest Community Collaborative Partnership (CCP) Center from Rosa.  There is constant communication between Rosa and mom at this time and the family is most grateful to Rosa for the work she is doing on their behalf.

We Salute Rosa!!  Gracias Amiga….
